When grinding and polishing with the machine, it is important to work at low speeds. Too high a speed can cause burn marks on the stone or the abrasive. Granite, for example, turns brown if it gets too hot. If hook-and-loop sanding discs get too hot, the plastic loops of the hook-and-loop backing-pad can burn on the edge and the hook-and-loop disc no longer has a good grip.

If you do not go straight for a sanding machine with fixed low speeds, we recommend using a variable speed angle grinder. Always follow the recommendations of the abrasive manufacturer when setting the speed.

If you have the possibility of wet sanding and have the appropriate equipment, we always advise you to do so, especially for large, flat surfaces. Wet sanding is much faster than dry sanding, the surface will be more beautiful and your abrasives will have a much longer service life.

If your stone has a lot of curvature, make sure that there is always water between the abrasive and the stone when wet grinding to achieve an even grinding result.

At first glance, hook-and-loop fiber discs are the cheapest abrasives. They are wet and dry abrasive paper made of silicon carbide with a Velcro backing and in many different grit sizes, especially for harder types of stone, as the abrasive particles are very sharp. However, depending on the size and shape of your stone, you will need a larger quantity of the hook-and-loop sanding discs in different grit steps.

The advantage of hook-and-loop fiber discs over fiber discs without hook-and-loop backing is that you can use the entire surface of the hook-and-loop disc for sanding when working on large areas, as there is no recess in the centre. Fiber discs are made of the same material, but are attached to the hook-and-loop backing-pad with a nut, so there is no continuous surface for sanding.

For the hook-and-loop fiber discs you need a hook-and-loop mounting plate, which you can get from rigid to very flexible with a thick foam layer, depending on the area of application.

If you want to grind and polish marble with fibre(velcro) discs, we recommend the following steps of grit sizes: 40, 60, 120, 240, 400, 600, 800 - then you can polish. For grinding granite, fibre (velcro) discs made of silicon carbide are not quite as suitable, as abrasion takes place very quickly, i.e. you need a lot of fibre (velcro) discs for the grinding process. Silicon carbide discs can also quickly become too hot and burn the stone. We therefore advise using diamond grinding wheels with a long service life, which are also very suitable for grinding e.g.limestone from a Mohs hardness of about 4. For larger granite surfaces, wet grinding is also particularly recommended.

The diamond grinding wheelsKGS Swiflex K1 are designed fordry grinding and have a Velcro backing with which they are attached to a Velcro disc. The grinding wheels are very suitable for working on marble, but also have a good stock removal on e.g. granite. We recommend not to use these hook-and-loop sanding discs for abrasive stones, as the diamond particles will become blunt too quickly.

TheKGS Swiflex K1 discs have a metal bond in the coarser grits and a synthetic resin bond in the finer grits. As the diamond grinding wheels with the metal bond in particular require an extra strong hold on the Velcro disc, we recommend that you work with a separate Velcro disc for each grit. It is easier and gentler on the material to change the complete disc with grinding wheel on the machine than to keep fixing discs of other grits on the Velcro disc. If the grinding wheels are frequently detached from the Velcro disc, diamond segments can also break out.

Particularly effective on granite is the diamond grinding wheelKGS Speedline with Velcro backing, which is exclusively suitable forwet grinding. This grinding wheel contains 50% more diamond particles and is bonded with a flexible resin compound in which the diamonds are embedded. When grinding, the resin bond is also removed, so that new sharp diamond particles always come to the surface. This is the fastest grinding wheel for working with granite. However, very good results can also be achieved with marble and harder limestone.

The diamond grinding discKGS Flexis is also intended forwet grinding. It has a normal bond and is particularly suitable for working with marble. The grinding wheel can also be used for granite, but is less efficient there. Abrasive stones should not be worked with this grinding wheel.

For small surfaces and hard-to-reach areas, we recommend theKGS Swiflex QS K LOC diamond grinding wheels. The grinding wheels can be used wet and dry. In addition to the angle grinder, they can also be used with flexible shaft machines. The grinding wheels are particularly suitable for soft and hard marble as well as for hard limestone and serpentine. A K-LOC backing-pad is required.
